At Archbishop Temple Church of England High School we believe that literacy teaching is the responsibility of every teacher in every curriculum subject. The English department endeavours to teach the key skills of literacy but every teacher is expected to develop and improve standards of literacy through providing excellent models and opportunities for pupils to practice reading, writing, speaking and listening in planned and focussed ways.

Our main aims are to:

  1. Support pupils' learning in all subjects by helping teachers to be clear about the ways in which their work with pupils contributes to and enriches the development of pupils' literacy skills
  2. Develop awareness that literacy opens up personal pathways to success and is central to personal expression, confidence and active participation in society, the economy and culture
  3. Raise our pupils' own expectations of achievement, thus raising standards and  creating independent, life-long learners
