Subject: Business
CURRICULUM INTENT
The GCSE Business curriculum at Archbishop Temple is grounded in the core values of faith, nurture and service, and is designed to promote strong Spiritual Moral, Social and Cultural development. Students explore real business activity, current events and government decisions so they can understand why organisations act as they do and how these actions affect consumers, employees, communities and the wider economy. Through this, they develop the curiosity, integrity and social awareness needed to contribute positively to society.
The study of business is linked very strongly to our school values of faith, nurture and service as shown below: -
Faith encourages students to reflect on ethical behaviour, stewardship and integrity in business. They consider how values influence leadership, corporate responsibility and the treatment of stakeholders. This links to spiritual development whereby students reflect on beliefs, values and purpose in the context of business ethics and responsible decision-making.
Nurture guides the development of confident, reflective and resilient learners. Students build commercial awareness, evaluate information critically and communicate respectfully. This links to moral development where students explore right and wrong in business contexts, including fair treatment of workers, environmental responsibility and ethical marketing.
Service inspires students to think about how enterprise can improve lives, support communities and contribute to the common good. Social development: Students examine how businesses impact society, employment, living standards and community wellbeing. This links to cultural development whereby students though the study of businesses global markets, appreciate diversity and the interconnected nature of the modern world.
Through the study of business, we aim to develop: -
· Enterprising individuals who can think commercially while recognising the ethical and social responsibilities of business.
· Independent and reflective thinkers who can question assumptions, consider multiple viewpoints and justify decisions with clarity and compassion.
· Confident communicators who can construct well-argued, balanced and evidence-based responses.
· Informed citizens who understand current business and economic issues and can interpret their impact on different groups, especially those who are vulnerable or disadvantaged.
· Problem-solvers who can draw on real business examples to make decisions, propose solutions and consider how these solutions can serve others and society.
The business course of study meets the curriculum intent as students engage with real-world case studies, news stories and examples from local, national and global businesses. They analyse why decisions are made and evaluate their effects on different stakeholders, always considering the ethical, social and environmental dimensions of business behaviour. This approach strengthens SMSC development by encouraging reflection, ethical reasoning, cultural awareness and social responsibility.
The curriculum nurtures students’ personal development, encourages them to act with integrity, and prepares them to contribute positively to the communities they will one day live and work in. It also provides a strong foundation for Business A level and equips students with the knowledge, skills and values needed for future study, employment and responsible citizenship.

Trips are important as a means of understanding the subject in relation to the outside world. As such we have visited Manchester Airport and the visitor centre to learning about the airport as a business. Later this year we will be going to London to visit the Houses of Parliament and the Museum of Brands. Further trips are planned for the forthcoming years.
