On Monday 15th November 2021, pupils in years 10 and 11 studying GCSE Business listened to an inspiring talk delivered by Dan Austin, Managing Director of Lake District Farmers.

Dan talked about how he started his business, overcoming hurdles and setbacks to grow his business, the rules he has learned and advice that has served him well. He spoke about the importance of producing the best quality product and building relationships with farmers as well as some of the UK’s top chefs, restaurateurs and hotels.

It was interesting to hear about how the business overcame the challenge of the pandemic and transforming his business to start supplying directly to the public, via ecommerce, during the lockdowns. Dan also spoke about how he has been working with Lancaster University on a study to enable the business to work towards becoming completely carbon neutral with net zero emissions. At the end of the session there was some time for pupil questions.

“We were very lucky to have such a dynamic, knowledgeable and experienced businessman coming to speak with our pupils,” said Mrs Mooney, Head of Business."It helps them to link everything we learn in class to the world of work and life beyond school. I’m so grateful to Dan for giving up his time to share his experiences, particularly in relation to how he dealt with Covid."
