Archbishop of York's visit to Archbishop Temple High School

Staff and pupils at Archbishop Temple High School were delighted to welcome the Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, to school on the 9th September 2016.

The Archbishop spent a full morning with staff and pupils. He toured the school with a group of pupils, engaged with pupils in lessons and answered questions from pupils in a special Q&A session.

The Archbishop was visiting the school to find out about the impact of the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award. The unique citizenship award was set up by the Archbishop to empower young people to make a difference in their local community whilst acquiring key leadership skills at the same time. Every pupil at Archbishop Temple High School completes the Archbishop of York Young Leaders Award.

Pupils asked a range of thought provoking questions about his daily life, personal challenges, his thoughts on celebrity culture, his favourite sport and his thoughts and feelings on becoming Archbishop. He spoke about how he felt that young people could change the world for the better and he hoped the award would help them grow in confidence.

“I thought he answered our questions in a really interesting and engaging way,” said Head Girl Domonique West. “His answers changed the way I think about a lot of things.”

“The Archbishop spent time talking with me about my own faith and beliefs,” said Head Boy Max Cross. “He was really inspiring.”

Headteacher Gill Jackson said, “The pupils really enjoyed meeting the Archbishop, his warm personality made an immediate impact as he encouraged them to participate in their community and ‘be the change they want to see’.
